BMW 328 Books and Sources

The magazines, archives, results lists, club and museum histories, maker's texts and books behind every page of this site, each listed with its address where it has one and graded by the kind of source it is.

The earliest report of a 328 in the list below is Motor Sport's account of the Eifel races of 14 June 1936, in which Ernst Henne won the sports-car class for unsupercharged two-litre cars on the 328's first outing. The latest is BMW's notice of May 2026 that the Bügelfalte, chassis 85032, had won the Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este's Best of Show, almost 90 years on. Between the two stand the reports, archive records, results lists, histories and books that the other pages cite, each listed once, with its address where it has one.source 1source 2

How the sources are graded

The pill beside each source says what kind of source it is, and it grades the source as a whole, not every line in it. There are four kinds.

Primary sources were made at the time or by the people concerned. They are Motor Sport's reports, buyers' lists, essays and letters from 1931 to 1955; BMW's own record of the type in the BMW Group Archive, its data sheets and its press texts, magazine and service pages from 2002 to 2026; the rules that the 1000 Miglia's organisers and FIVA, the international federation of historic vehicles, publish for their own certificates; Carrozzeria Touring's history of itself; and Dan and Eva Gurney's letter of 1996 in memory of Huschke von Hanstein. BMW's later texts are primary as a record of what BMW says about its own car, which can differ from the record of 1936–40, so the pages give those claims to BMW in the sentence; a firm's or a club's account of itself is treated the same way.

Reference sources are later work done with care: Denis Jenkinson's and Mike Lawrence's histories in Motor Sport in the 1980s and the magazine's obituaries; the Neue Deutsche Biographie and its online index; the Frazer Nash Archives; the Bristol Owners Heritage Trust's histories by Jonathan Wood and Andrew Blow; the BMW and Bristol owners' clubs; the Simeone museum's account of its car; a restorer's account of a car it finished; motoring-press reports of later years; and the catalogue of the German National Library. Database sources are racingsportscars' results lists, read race by race and car by car. Unchecked covers German and English Wikipedia, an enthusiast's page on Franco Sbarro's replica and a photographer's page on the coupé in the Hellenic Motor Museum. The pages cite an Unchecked source only beside a stronger one, or with its claim attributed in the sentence.source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7source 8source 9source 10source 11source 12source 13source 14source 15source 16source 17source 18source 19source 20

Reading a citation

On the other pages, small numbered marks at the end of a section show the sources it rests on. Each leads to the list at the foot of that page, which numbers the sources in the order the page first uses them, so one source may carry a different number from page to page. After a source's name comes where to look in it: a page, a section, a race or a table, such as p. 40 of Motor Sport for June 1986, where Jenkinson's history of the car begins. The list below gives every source the site cites once, with its address as plain text.source 11

The sources that carry most weight

Seven families of sources carry most of the weight:

SourceWhat it gives
BMW's own records and textsThe type record in the BMW Group Archive, BMW Classic's data sheets of 2011 and BMW's press texts from 2002 to 2026: the maker's figures, and its account of the debut, the works team, the 1940 cars and the cars it bought back or rebuilt
Motor Sport, 1936–40Race reports from the 1936 Eifelrennen to the Brescia race of 1940, AFN's British listings, and Cecil Clutton's essay of August 1940 on the German sports cars
Denis Jenkinson in Motor Sport, 1986 and 1988The 328's 50th-anniversary history and its sequels: the designers, the engine, the prototypes, the first British car and the end of production
racingsportscarsResults race by race from 1936 to 1961, with a column for each car's chassis number
The Frazer Nash ArchivesAFN, its people and the cars it brought to Britain from 1937 to 1939
Bristol's historians and Mike LawrenceWood's and Blow's histories for the Bristol Owners Heritage Trust and Lawrence's of 1986: the engine's journey to Bristol in 1945 and what Bristol made of it
The Neue Deutsche BiographieThe lives of three of the people behind the 328: Franz Josef Popp, Rudolf Schleicher and Wunibald Kamm

Where they disagree, the pages show each reading beside its source. BMW's own texts are one case: the weight they give the production roadster differs from one release to another, and the specifications set the figures out.source 5source 21source 6source 22source 23source 1source 24source 3source 25source 11source 26source 17source 27source 28source 13source 29source 14source 30source 31source 12source 32source 33

Books

The printed books behind the pages begin with three entries in the Neue Deutsche Biographie, Germany's national biography: Patrick Oelze's on Popp (volume 20, 2001) and Hans Christoph Graf von Seherr-Thoß's on Schleicher (volume 23, 2007) and Kamm (volume 11, 1977), each read in the online edition, the Deutsche Biographie, whose index also has an entry for Henne.

Rainer Simons wrote a book-length history of the car, Vom Roadster zum Mythos: BMW 328, published in Munich in 1996 with BMW as issuing body; Halwart Schrader joined him for Motorbuch's editions of 2016 and 2024, and the German National Library's records give all three. Jonathan Wood quotes BMW 328: From Roadster to Legend, its English-language edition, on what passed between Bristol and BMW in 1945, as BMW 328 Engine tells.

L. J. K. Setright's Bristol Cars and Engines (Motor Racing Publications, 1974) takes the Bristols model by model from the 400 of 1946, with chapters on the racing 450 and the Bristol racing engines; Setright then chaired the Bristol Owners' Club, Motor Sport's reviewer noted that November, and the club's buyers' guide draws on him for what Bristol changed in the BMW engine.source 31source 12source 32source 34source 16source 29source 35source 36
