BMW 328 Specs

Power, weight, top speed and the other figures BMW and AFN published for the BMW 328, version by version: the production roadster, the Frazer Nash-BMW sold in Britain, and the Mille Miglia roadsters, Touring coupé and Kamm coupé that BMW raced in 1939 and 1940.

The tables set the 328's versions side by side: the production roadster, the Frazer Nash-BMW 328 sold in Britain, and BMW's works racers of 1939 and 1940, the Mille Miglia roadsters, the Touring coupé and the Kamm coupé. Most figures are BMW's own: the roadster's from BMW's archive record of the type and its 2011 data sheet, the racers' from the sheets BMW Classic wrote that year for the cars in its collection. The British column is AFN's catalogue data, as Motor Sport reproduced it in its buyers' guides of 1937 and 1938. An asterisk marks a figure that another source gives differently, and opens a note with every reading and its source.source 1source 2source 3source 4source 5source 6source 7

Power and engine speed

Every source gives the roadster the same output; they differ over the engine speed. BMW's archive record and data sheet give the lower speed, and AFN's 1937 listing agrees, though AFN's figures, as the importer's, were not independent of BMW's. Cecil Clutton, in Motor Sport in August 1940, and Jonathan Wood, in his 2009 history of the Bristol 400, give a higher one.source 1source 2source 6source 8source 9

Weight

BMW has printed two kerb weights for the roadster: the lower in its archive record and its 2011 data sheet, the higher in its 2009 history of its roadsters and its 2006 press kit for the Concept Coupé Mille Miglia. None says what the weight included. Clutton's figure of 1940, in hundredweights, is lighter than either, and he gives no basis for it.source 1source 2source 10source 11source 8

Top speed

The top speed is BMW against BMW again: the archive record, the data sheet and the 2009 history give one figure, the 2006 press kit one a little lower. AFN's British figures were higher, a round figure in miles an hour in Motor Sport's guides and, on its stand at the London show of October 1936, road-test figures above that. In 1986 Denis Jenkinson gave a figure between BMW's two, and called it honest.source 1source 2source 10source 11source 6source 7source 12source 13

The Frazer Nash-BMW 328

In October 1938 Motor Sport's guide printed a higher output for the British car, at a higher engine speed, than a year before, and gave no reason. Clutton gave the car's RAC rating as 16 h.p. The British price did not change between AFN's stand at Earls Court in October 1936 and the guide of October 1938.source 6source 7source 8source 13

The 1940 Mille Miglia roadsters

The column is BMW Classic's sheet for the roadster Briem and Richter drove to fifth place in 1940. BMW's 2011 text gives the roadsters less power, and Motor Sport, reporting the race, a lower weight; the Mille Miglia page sets the two weights face to face.source 3source 14source 15source 16

The Berlin–Rome roadster

BMW Classic's 2011 sheets include one more Touring-bodied 328, the Berlin–Rome roadster: chassis 1937, body 1941, bodied, the sheet says, for the Berlin–Rome race intended for 1941. The sheet gives it 120 hp at 5,500 rpm, less than the 1940 roadsters, with their weight and top speed.source 17

The Touring coupé

The coupé's figures come from BMW Classic's 2011 sheet and from BMW's release of 2002, whose dimensions, compression ratio, tank and tyres are the car's as it came back to BMW that year. Motor Sport gave its engine less power, at a lower speed, in 1940. Touring built the body in Milan on the 328's chassis, and BMW gives its drag coefficient as about 0.35.source 4source 18source 15source 16

The Kamm coupé

The column is BMW Classic's sheet for its 2010 reconstruction, which also tells the original car's history. By BMW's account the body was made in Munich, in-house, on a chassis lengthened by 20 cm (8 in), and its drag coefficient of about 0.25 was measured on a scale model. Motor Sport gave the car a slightly lower weight in 1940, and a lower top speed.source 5source 15source 19source 16

Price and production

The price new is the archive record's for Germany, in Reichsmarks, and AFN's all-in price for Britain. The production readings set BMW's total, and the number of cars it gave the standard roadster body, beside the rounder totals of the Frazer Nash Archives and Jenkinson; none of them says what it includes. The roadster page gives BMW's two answers on how many survive.source 1source 2source 20source 13source 6source 7
